COMPUTER NETWORK

WHAT IS COMPUTER NETWORK?

When two or more computers are connected together with the objective of communicating with each other and sharing their resources then they form a computer network.
For example, when sales executives of an organisation work together to sell the product of the company they form company’s sales network.

To form a computer network and establish coordination among the computers of the network ,certain hardware and software elements need to be present in the network. For proper communication among them certain rules of communication, called protocol need to be established.

Protocol is a system of rules that allow two or more entities of a communication system to transmit information via any kind of variation of a physical quantity.

NEED FOR NETWORKING

Following are the requirements that lead for networking:-

1) File sharing:In computing environment ,there often arises a need to share the files among many users. This can not be done in standalone mode.Railway reservation application is the most convincing file sharing requirement. This application and reservation facilities that we all are enjoying these days would never come in to existence.

2)Resource sharing:-Large disk storage, printers ,heavy input output devices are generally costly than networking , devices available on the network can be shared among all the users and each one of them may they are connected to the systems.

3)Fast communication:-Fast and reliable communication is the fundamental requirement of any business completive environment. Since transferring document and letter through normal methods takes too much time but network users can easily exchange documents and data within no time.

4)Data Backup:-Backing up data on individual machines is both time consuming and unreliable .But if you have the back up system installed on the network server can easily do the process and give the reliable results.

BASIC COMPONENTS OF NETWORK

1)Sender
2)Receiver
3)Medium
4)Message
5)Protocol

COMMON TYPES OF NETWORKS

1)Local Area Networks (LAN)
2)Wide Area Networks(WAN)

1)Local Area Network

Local area networks are the networks that spread within a short distance of a kilometer or to a building  or campus. It is short range network.

2)Wide Area Network

Wide area networks are the networks in which computers are spread over a long distances.
It is wide range networks could either be in different countries ,cities or localities.
